The luxurious La Manga Club Resort in Spain is Europe’s premier golf destination. Recently the La Manga Club Resort renewed its ties with the Professional Golfers’ Association’s (PGA) of Europe, making the La Manga Club the continental European base of the Professional Golfers’ Association’s of Europe. From many years the La Manga Club has been hosting the Association’s Annual Congress and International Team Championships.
Some of golf’s most illustrious names have been associated with the La Manga Club resort since it opened in 1972 including legends Gary Player (La Manga Club’s first director of golf), Arnold Palmer (winner of the 1975 Spanish Open and re-designer of its South Course) and the late Severiano Ballesteros – the resort’s touring professional from 1980-85.
In 2014 the La Manga Club agreed to stage one of its the PGA’s most prestigious international pro-am golf tournaments. This PGA golf tournament was won by Joost Steenkamer after completing a stunning comeback on the back nine of his final round to finish level par for the tournament, three shots ahead of PGA of Sweden professional Mikael Lundberg.
This prestigious pro-am golf tournament took place at the La Manga Club Resort in March and was hailed as a huge success for the resort, which has enjoyed significant growth during 2014 including the opening of a new Leadbetter Golf Academy as part of a €1m renovation of its practice facilities.
The PGAs of Europe chief executive Ian Randell said “We are very pleased that the first event in 2014 was a great success and we’re sure that the pro-am will continue to grow into the future.”
In 2015 the International Pro-Am PGA golf tournament will once again return to the La Manga Club resort. The golf tournament is to take place at the La Manga Club Resort in Spain between February 17-19 2015. This Pro-Am PGA golf tournament will involve up to 30 teams from across the continent all aiming to win the overall winning prize fund of €30,000.
José Asenjo, general manager at La Manga Club, said: “La Manga Club is delighted to be partnering with the PGAs of Europe again after the overwhelming success of the inaugural event earlier this year.”
Gary Silcock, director of golf at La Manga Club, said: “As Europe’s top sports and leisure destination, it was a logical step for La Manga Club to team up with the PGAs of Europe again and this is fantastic news for the resort.
“This region of Spain offers the perfect climate for winter golf. The resort is very popular with professionals hosting coaching groups on overseas breaks and the pro-am will give us the chance to showcase the extensive golf and practice facilities that we have to a discerning international audience.”
